Mercurey, Saône-et-Loire
The Brintet history in Mercurey begins with the arrival of Jéhan Briétat from Italy in 1340, when he gained employment as a page at the Chateau de Montaigu. At the end of the 15th century, the name was transformed to Brintet and 100 years later, the family became owners of some vines in Mercurey. Flash forward several centuries and we find Luc Brintet and his wife Veronique heading the 11.5-hectare domaine since 1984. The majority of their production is Pinot Noir, although they do make small amounts of excellent Chardonnay. It is they who have ushered the domaine into the upper echelon of Mercurey producers—they have gradually expanded holdings while at the same time increasing quality in an effort to showcase the incredible values this appellation can provide. The aforementioned 11.5 hectares are spread across Rully and Mercurey and planted with mainly Pinot Noir. The vines have an average age of 35 years and their yields are kept low. The Brintets are working as close to organically as they feel possible. The vines are treated with organic compounds and the vineyards are plowed. Occasionally a green harvest is employed. Harvest is by hand and each parcel is vinified separately. After a short pre-soak, the grapes are fermented with pump overs to cover the cap. Aging is in 225-liter oak barrels, 1/3 of which are new.
“This is one of the best domaines in Mercurey.”—Clive Coates, MW, The Wines of Burgundy

Domaine Brintet Mercurey Vieilles Vignes
This wine comes from 65-year old vines grown on clay and limestone soils. The nose is full of red and black fruits. Additional notes of vanilla and spice coat the palate. The wine is approachable at a young age and with its finely tannic finish, will certainly age gracefully. Domaine Brintet Mercurey 1er Cru “Les Byots”
From 45-year old vines planted on clay-limestone soil and with low yields. Grapes are 100% hand harvested and are pressed, then undergo a pre-fermentation cold soak. The wine is aged 12 months in oak casks, 30% of which are new. A mere 1,500 bottles are produced. Domaine Brintet Mercurey 1er Cru “La Levrière”
La Levrière is a monopole owned by the family. With its delicate aromas of cherry and blackcurrant, along with white flowers, this wine entices in the glass. On the palate, it is elegant and sophisticated. A wonderful match for coq a vin. |
